Smiling Dog Landscapes was launched in August 2000 by owner Tom McDonald. Tom has been in the "green" industry for over thirty years and his career includes numerous management positions in the green house, landscape, golf course and consulting fields. In 2010 Tom launched the Smiling Dog Learning Center to bring classes and information on living in the Sonoran Desert to the community.
Tom earned his B.S. in Plant Biology from Drury College and is a Master Gardener certified by the University of Arizona. An active member of the community, Tom is a member of both the Gold Canyon Business Association and the Apache Junction Chamber of Commerce. Smiling Dog was responsible for landscaping of the Gold Canyon Monument at the intersection of Kings Ranch Toad and Highway 60 as well as the Blue Start Memorial at Superstition Mountain Museum. He is a dedicated supporter of the Superstition Area Land Trust, serving on the Board of Directors for the past two years and was elected president of that organization in 2012.
